Red Hot Chili PeppersPosted by Suzanne, on September 18th, 2009

On my road trip from southern Arizona to northern Colorado we drove through a town called Hatch, New Mexico….famous for it’s chili peppers. Everywhere there were garlands of chili peppers hanging….deep crimson red, greens and rusty earthy reds. They reminded me of a silly and humorous Australian story I have told many times in grade schools about Wombat Stew..ooey gooey yummy chewy wombat stew! Well, of course the Wombat gets away, but not before the Dingo eats a broth of slugs and bugs and creepy crawlies. I have adapted the tale with a southwest mood, where it is coyote who wants to cook and eat Jack Rabbit, who outsmarts him by helping him make a broth full of ‘good’ things to eat….and lots of red hot chili peppers….When Coyote tastes the broth to see if it is ready to put Jack Rabbit in….of course …..ooooooooooowwwwwwwww, it is hot hot hot…and he howls away looking for water….Jack Rabbit gets his chance to run away. I like finding inspiration for my stories in unlikely places. check out this great site http://www.hatchchilefest.com
